PROJECT 1B
FILM & SEQUENCE

For Project 1B: Film and sequence I choose Mike Figgis with his movie titled ‘Timecode’ for my filmmaker. Timecode is a movie that Mike Figgis made based on realtime method and didn’t use any effect or edit afterwards. Timecode resembles what is known as a “quad split”: a live-television director chooses the feeds from four simultaneous camera sources, selecting on the fly the best action to air (Solman, 2000). Mike used a split screen method (see figure 1) where in film and video production, is the visible division of the screen, traditionally in half, but also in several simultaneous images, rupturing the illusion that the screen’s frame is a seamless view of reality, similar to that of the human eye (Wikipedia, 2021). With that method I applied split screen method where four frames of simultaneous action play in the same screen that follow different characters into my video (see figure 2). Solman, 2020 also mentioned that in Timecode, Mike Figgis has painstakingly and often strikingly coordinated the action of four uninterrupted and interrelated feature-length narratives, then presented the illusion of a live quad split on a single movie screen rather than four TV monitors.
Figgis foregrounds the process of editing without a single cut, the action that played in the same screen may be from different character but the time when it all happened it is the same called ‘climactic moment’. In Timecode there’s an earthquake happening at the same time (see figure 3) and for my own film all the time where the four different character are doing their activities are all at 10pm (see figure 4).
For my video I applied 4 different character which is my friends where they done different activity at the same time. The upper left she is re-watching her college lecture while took some notes, upper right she is scrolling through her social media and then head to bed, meanwhile on the below left she was tidying up her sticker, checking the time and head to bed, and lastly on the below right she was watching movies while having a water. These all 4 different character are all doing the same thing but at the same time. On the other hand, Mike uses third person perspectives and all captured from different angle ( see figure 5) and that method is what I also applied to my work ( see figure 6) where all the camera are put from different angle but still uses the third person perspectives.
